Environmental Site Assessments in Quebec

Environmental Site Assessment – Phase I

According to the Guide de caractérisation des terrains published by the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, and the Fight Against Climate Change, the environmental assessment of the ESA Phase - I site consists in: becoming familiar with the land; defining site-specific characteristics based on available data; assessing activities that are likely to have contaminated soils, groundwater and air; targeting potentially contaminated areas, identifying the potential contamination type, and defining the need for additional information where applicable.

ESA Procedures – Phase I includes :

  • Access to information requests

  • Consulting archived documents and various organizations

  • Site visits

  • Final report with recommendations

ESA – Phase II and Phase III

According to the Guide de caractérisation des terrains published by the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, and the Fight Against Climate Change, the environmental characterization of the CES - Phase II & III sites consists in confirming the presence or absence of contamination or contaminants in different environments (water-soil) and specifying the type of contaminant, if any, in the potential areas identified in Phase I. Environmental Site Characterization - Phase III consists in delineating the extent of contamination (area and quantity) where the presence of contaminants has been observed in Phase II.

ESA – Phase II and III include:

  • The characterization of soils and groundwater using boreholes or trenches. Tecosol has its own Geoprobe drill, as well as a manual drill that makes it possible to access areas with restricted access.

  • Taking soil and water samples from the characterization boreholes. These are then sent to the laboratory for chemical analysis. The analyzed parameters are identified according to environmental risks. These test results allow us to confirm or deny the presence of contaminants.

  • Where there is contamination, Phase III involves additional drilling to outline the contaminated area properly.
